This Olivetti Lettera 32 was made in Ivrea, Italy in 1964. A true mid-century icon, it is compact, precise, and beautifully designed by Marcello Nizzoli. Its blue body and timeless Italian styling made it one of the most beloved writing companions of the 1960s, favored by writers, journalists, and thinkers worldwide. This particular machine comes from the first year of Lettera 32 production and features the early spring-loaded ribbon holders (photo 5) found only on the earliest iterations of this model. Personally, I find the early Italian-made versions to be slightly higher in quality than later examples. Some subtle differences include:
-Early Italian models include felt lining for sound and vibration reduction.
-The chrome trim feels smoother and more refined.
-The keystroke is more precise, with less side play.
-Early Italian models tend to have a more bluish tone, while later models appear greener.
(These are personal observations and may vary depending on how each machine has been preserved over the decades.)
This machine has an AZERTY (French) layout, including keys for "è", "é", "ç", "à", "ù" and two accent marks — diaeresis (¨) and circumflex (^). You can type accented characters such as ü and â. Please check the keyboard photos for additional special symbols.
The classic Olivetti Elite s a timeless serif typeface with elegant, highly readable letterforms. It produces crisp, refined text that is perfect for letters, journals, and everyday writing.
The typewriter is in very good cosmetic condition, with only very small surface marks visible. Please pay close attention to the listing photos. All keys, margins, line spacing, and ribbon functions operate properly. Basic cleaning and adjustments have been performed to ensure a smooth and responsive typing experience. The original carrying case shows wear consistent with age and features two zippers that meet in the middle, and both zippers are functional. The case is available as an add-on for this typewriter. A new ribbon is installed, and additional ribbons can be purchased separately.
