This Olivetti Lettera 32 was made in Spain around 1973—a classic mid-century portable typewriter loved by writers, journalists, and thinkers around the world. Its iconic teal body and timeless Italian design by Marcello Nizzoli embody both function and beauty: compact, precise, and built to last. What makes this particular machine exceptionally unique is its factory Hebrew and Yiddish setup, featuring a reverse carriage mechanism that moves from left to right to facilitate seamless right-to-left typing.
This typewriter carries rich provenance, originally purchased on April 19, 1973, from Max Aeschlimann Büromaschinen on Steinentorstrasse in Basel, Switzerland. The original sale and service documentation stickers detailing this history will be included with the purchase; however, they have been removed from the listing photos to protect the previous owner's privacy.
It features a dedicated Hebrew/Yiddish layout. The key set includes the complete Hebrew alphabet and final forms, alongside dedicated Yiddish ligatures/digraphs. It also comes equipped with standard punctuation, math symbols, and currency designations ($, £). Please refer to the keyboard photo and typing sample for the complete array of available characters and symbols.
This machine features a crisp 10 CPI (characters per inch) Pica Hebrew typeface. Characterized by strong geometric balance, square-form baseline anchors, and dark, well-defined stroke terminals, it renders Hebrew and Yiddish text with exceptional legibility and vintage character. The spacing is exceptionally even across all pitch intervals, making it ideal for clear manuscripts, archival correspondence, or artistic display.
This machine is in excellent cosmetic condition, showing only some very small marks on the very back of the body. Please pay close attention to the listing photos. All keys, margins, line spacing, and ribbon mechanisms operate properly. Detailed cleaning and adjustments have been performed to ensure a smooth and responsive typing experience. A carrying bag, also made in Spain and showing wear consistent with age, is included with the typewriter. A fresh ribbon has been installed on the original Olivetti metal spools, and additional fresh ribbons can be purchased separately.
