Vintage French Maëlzel Metronome by A. Durand & Cie, c. 1930–1945, Solid Wood Case, Mechanical Wind-Up, Fully Functional

Crafted during a historic era of French horology and music publishing, this genuine A. Durand & Cie metronome (c. 1930–1945) represents exceptional mid-century tempo-keeping. Featuring the classic obelisk-pyramid silhouette, it houses a precision-engineered French brass clockwork movement that produces a crisp, resonant acoustic click. Marked with the prestigious "A Durand & Cie / Place de la Madeleine / Paris" lower scale branding alongside the traditional diamond-shaped "Métronome Maëlzel" door emblem, this piece captures true Parisian elegance - an essential acquisition for serious antique collectors and classical musicians alike.

This metronome is in very good antique condition. Unlike many surviving pieces of this era, the wooden case has no cracks or structural repairs. It displays only light, age-appropriate surface wear and minor handling marks consistent with careful preservation. Please review the listing photos carefully for a detailed visual assessment.

Mechanically, the piece is fully functional. The internal solid brass clockwork mechanism operates smoothly, and the mainspring retains strong tension. When tested at 208 BPM, a single full winding runs for approximately 16 minutes (equivalent to roughly 55 minutes of continuous operation at 60 BPM) with a steady, reliable beat. The case has been lightly cleaned and conditioned to preserve and nourish the vintage wood finish.

When compared to modern electronic metronomes, it is not laboratory-precise, but it keeps time very closely and operates as expected for a vintage mechanical instrument. Minor variation is normal and part of the character of traditional wind-up metronomes. Noticeable defects are shown in the listing images. Please note that this is a vintage item, and minor signs of age or use may remain despite careful inspection.
