Vintage French Maëlzel Paquet Metronome, 1930-45, Solid Wood Case, Mechanical Wind-Up, Functional Without Bell

This is a vintage French Maëlzel–Paquet metronome, produced by one of the most prolific makers of mechanical metronomes in history. The front diamond badge references the original 1815, when Johann Nepomuk Maelzel patented the modern pendulum metronome, and 1846, when Philippe-Nicolas Paquet took over the workshop — a nod to the long lineage of European mechanical metronome making. The Paquet firm manufactured large numbers of quality metronomes in France and supplied them to many different distributors. Paquet’s production continued well into the 20th century, and today their pieces are among the most commonly encountered antique metronomes, appreciated both for their mechanical reliability and for their connection to the long tradition of European tempo devices that trace back to Maëlzel’s original 1815 patent.

This metronome is in very good vintage condition with character consistent with its age. Notably, there is a vintage shop sticker on the left side near the winding key—likely from the original retailer where it was purchased. The adjustable tempo weight is missing its small side set screw, though it still holds its position securely and functions properly (as demonstrated in the video). Additionally, the bell mechanism is no longer operational, so this piece is being sold as a standard non-bell metronome. Otherwise, the body shows only light surface wear and minor handling marks. Aside from the disabled bell feature, the core metronome functions smoothly. The internal solid brass clockwork mechanism operates well, and the mainspring retains strong tension. When tested at 208 BPM, a single full winding runs for approximately 16 minutes (equivalent to roughly 55 minutes of continuous operation at 60 BPM) with a steady, reliable beat. The case has been lightly cleaned and conditioned with a thin layer of protective wood wax to nourish and preserve the vintage finish.

When compared to modern electronic metronomes, it is not laboratory-precise, but it keeps time very closely and operates as expected for a vintage mechanical instrument. Minor variation is normal and part of the character of traditional wind-up metronomes. Noticeable defects are shown in the listing images.
